APPLICATION OF LiDAR TECHNOLOGY IN TRAFFIC ON A SIMULATION SOFTWARE

ABSTRACT: In order for autonomous cars to become a commercial reality, car manufacturers equip vehicles with sensory technologies that can plan a journey through a virtual map of the world. Sensor technology based on self-governing cars is the detection and ranking of light (LiDAR), which provides high resolution and three-dimensional environmental information. LiDAR can simultaneously locate the position of people and objects around the vehicle and estimate the speed and the way they are moving. Using this information, the embedded in-car computer system (OBC) can determine the safest way for the vehicle to reach its destination. This paper aims to present the principle of LiDAR technology and its application in a simulation environment.. With the help of the software program, it shows the efficiency and effectiveness of its role in traffic. With limited 2D images that the cameras could provide, LiDAR technology creates a 3D real-time map of the environment by displaying an area of 360 degrees, and as such has the potential to improve the development of autonomous vehicles.

 


SAŽETAK: Kako bi autonomni automobili postali komercijalna stvarnost, proizvođači automobila opremaju vozila senzorskim tehnologijama koje mogu planirati put kroz virtualnu kartu svijeta. Senzorska tehnologija koja se temelji na samoupravnim automobilima je detekcija i rangiranje svjetlosti (LiDAR), koja pruža visoku rezoluciju i trodimenzionalne informacije o okolini. LiDAR može istovremeno locirati položaj ljudi i objekata oko vozila te procijeniti brzinu i put kojim se kreću. Koristeći te informacije, ugrađeni računarski sistem u vozilu (OBC) može odrediti najsigurniji način da vozilo stigne do odredišta. Ovaj rad istražuje principe rada LiDAR tehnologije i njegove primjene u simulacijskom okruženju. Uz pomoć softverskog programa ima za cilj da prikaže efikasnost i učinkovitost njegove uloge u saobraćaju. Ograničenim 2D slikama koje su kamere mogle pružiti, LiDAR tehnologija izrađuje 3D mapu okoline u stvarnom vremenu prikazujući područje od 360 stepeni, te kao takva ima potencijal da unaprijedi razvoj autonomnih vozila.
