IMPACT OF DRIVER FATIGUE AND SLEEPINESS ON ROAD SAFETY AND PREVENTION MEASURES

ABSTRACT: This paper covers the issue of driver fatigue impact on traffic safety. That issue is much more significant than it seems at first sight. Since the impact of fatigue in contributing traffic accidents is hard to distinguish and to prove, one can say that official statistics of traffic accidents severely underestimate fatigue as cause of accident and the number of fatigue related accidents is underreported. Fatigue is behavioral state associated with feeeling of discomfort, often accompanied with muscle pain and hostility to continuing current job. Fatigue is progressively worsening with length and intensity of task. Young people are among the social group that has highest rate of occurence of traffic accidents related to drowsiness.

Best way to avoid drowsy driving is to improve sleep hygiene. In case of acute sleepiness, napping proves to be the best method to avoid fatigue related accidents.

 

SAŽETAK: U ovom radu je obrađen problem utjecaja umora vozača na sigurnost vožnje. On je mnogo značajniji nego se to na prvi pogled čini. Obzirom da se utjecaj umora prilikom nastanka saobraćajne nezgode teško uočava i dokazuje, može se reći da je faktor umora u statistikama o uzrocima nastanka saobraćajnih nezgoda podcijenjen i prijavljen u izvještajima kao uzrok u mnogostruko manjem broju nego što je to realno. Umor je bihevioralno stanje povezano sa osjećajima istrošenosti i neudobnosti, često sa bolovima u mišićima i odbojnošću prema nastavku vršenja trenutne aktivnosti. Umor se progresivno pogoršava sa dužinom i intenzitetom zadatka.

Mladi ljudi su grupa koja je najrizičnija za nastanak saobraćajnih nezgoda uzrokovanih pospanošću.
Najbolje ocijenjeni način prevencije nastanka nezgoda uzrokovanih pospanošću i umorom jeste poboljšanje
higijene spavanja, a u slučaju akutne pojave pospanosti najbolji lijek je kratak san (15-20 minuta).
